Composite (Tooth Colored) Fillings

Get your childs tooth restored at Alameda Pediatric Dentistry Dental fillings are used to restore areas of your tooth that have been affected by decay. At Alameda Pediatric Dentistry, our dentists use a tooth-colored blend of quartz and resin material known as composite to fill in damaged spots on the surface of the tooth after we have removed any decay. Composite is a strong material that nearly mimics enamel in strength and appearance, helping the repair be hidden in your child’s mouth.

What are Tooth Fillings?

In general, all dental fillings (both amalgam and composite), are ideal for small dental restorations, not for large restorations. If a child has a larger amount of decay or fracture of the tooth, we will recommend a more durable option such as a full or partial dental crown.

Amalgam vs. Composite Materials

In general, dentists use one of two material to fill cavities in teeth: amalgam or composite.

•  Amalgam: Amalgam is a silver-colored material that is comprised of a blend of metal material and mercury. Amalgam is a strong, durable material, that does a great job in restoring the strength of the tooth, but many patients are unhappy with its dark color and some express fear of the mercury used, though the mercury is approved by the American Dental Association as being acceptable.
•  Composite: The composite filling does not use metal; it is a blend of quartz and a resin. Composite is also strong and durable, though not necessarily as long-lasting as amalgam, but can be shaded to match the exact color of your teeth, helping it to hide in your child’s mouth.

How we use Composite Material

Composite fillings are used to make repairs to the enamel, or outer layer, of the tooth. This means that we can:

•  Fill Cavities: Known in dentistry as caries, a cavity is the space or hole left from decay. Sugars found in food and plaque left on the teeth feeds bacteria which then emits an acid that eats away at the hard enamel surface. We can remove the bad bacteria and fill the space, restoring the tooth, with composite material.
•  Repair Chips: Composite filling is a strong material that can be used to make simple repairs to the tooth structure. Children often chip teeth from falls or outside impact injuries, we can make simple repairs with composite fillings.

Placing the Tooth Colored Filling

Before placing the composite material, we ensure that the tooth is clean and cleared of decay-causing bacteria. This step is very important, as we do not want bacteria to continue to cause damage beneath the filling.

With the decay removed, we are then able to fill the space with the putty-like material. The composite material is shaped, hardened with a blue light, and polished. The result is a material that so closely resembles your tooth; most people will never know it’s there.
